A test was never something we looked forward to in school. Somehow, the benefits of testing escaped us. What I remember is a feeling of uncertainty and impending danger. But, none of those tests were designed to destroy us. Their purpose was to assess what we knew. The emotion tied to taking tests was not thrust upon us. We were conditioned to respond that way.
A few years ago I went through a series of medical tests because of abdominal pain. I looked forward to how the test results might bring about a remedy for my discomfort. It turned out there was nothing wrong with me but my diet. Changing my diet became a test of my desire to be healthy.
There’s a testing of our heart that is spoken of in Scripture. This isn’t our physical heart but our spiritual heart. The heart has been described as the place were our mind, will and emotions reside. If we’re sober enough to realize that the purpose of these tests are to assess the condition of our heart, we’re in a position to change our mind, direct our will and manage our emotions.
God is jealous for you. The greatest commandment is to love Him will all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Loving our neighbor as ourselves is tied to that great commandment. He commands what is good for us. He is for you, not against you.
Proverbs 17:3 Fire tests the purity of silver and gold,
but the Lord tests the heart.
