Yesterday I walked a trail in Weston, CT where you can get to a spot to look out on the reservoir. I did this because I needed refreshment for my soul and God’s creation is a great source of inspiration for me. I looked down and saw how the sun made the granite stone shimmer and then spotted a rock formation just under the surface of the water that was in the perfect position to be highlighted by the sun. Something stirred in me of wanting to carry this beauty to others but, no matter how skilled a photographer I might be, the photos will always fall short of what was happening in my heart.
Last night we learned that the son and brother of dear friends of ours lost his life. He too was a lover of the great outdoors and found exceeding pleasure in exploring God’s creation. He was only recently married and we can only imagine the deep sorrow his new wife, parents, sisters and close friends are experiencing. Our comfort lies in the promises of the One who is revealing to this young man just how glorious He is. We will continue to stand by the family and pray for God’s comfort.
As I write this, I’m struck by how much more there is too life than what we can see. Our hearts yearn for eternity and yet we’re often frustrated by the surface things of life. This is why I spend time reading God’s word, praying, gathering with God’s people and getting away to beautiful sanctuaries of creation. That is where my mortal life touches the immortal God in tangible ways. This is not to say that the rest of my time is spent in futility but, that my heart yearns for the living God and for others to know Him.
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
