Last week a friend of mine helped me to install a fan on our back porch. After many failed attempts in the past of doing work like this without using the assembly instructions we decided we’d obey what was written. Once or twice we fell into the trap of assuming we knew what we were doing and ignored the instruction sheet. In each case we had to disassemble what we had done and redo the work. The purpose of the instructions was to guide us into a favorable result.
We have all heard of folks that have ignored the warnings of their doctors and suffered horribly for it. With the amount of information we have readily at our disposal it is easy to self-diagnose our symptoms and “play doctor”. It seems that many have little regard for people in authority. How do you come to a place where you can trust someone’s ability to help you?
King Solomon was considered one of the wisest men that ever lived, but his life ended in foolishness. He clearly violated what God had clearly told him to do and suffered for it. You can decide for yourself how this might have happened in his life and learn from his mistake.
God is sovereign, yet He gives us choices. He has clearly revealed Himself and His ways. He is the Most High. There is no greater authority. There is no greater love than His. Trust and obey Him.
1 Kings 11:1-3 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, ‘You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.’ Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord.
